Bhavnagar,
situated in Gujarat, is a port city in the Western part of India. It was
founded in 1743 by a Rajput Prince and was once capital of a princely
state. Bhavnagar was amongst the first of the princely states to join
the Indian Union after independence in 1947.According to 2001 census, Bhavnagar had a population of 18,79,340. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Bhavnagar has hot summers between April and June and pleasant winters between November and February. Monsoons visit during July and September. Bhavnagar tends to mostly be humid throughout the year because it is situated near the coast. Temperatures in Bhavnagar range from 13.85 to 38.45 degree celcius. Bhavnagar is connected by air to Mumbai and by rail to Ahmedabad. The city is well connected to other major cities of Gujarat such as Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Surat etc by Bus services operated by private and state-owned transport corporations. Daily flights are operated by Jet Airways and Air Deccan. It was one of the first city in Gujarat to have an airport.
Bhavnagar is known for some of the premier institutes in the country. Nanabhai Bhatt, Gijubhai Badheka and Harbhai Trivedi were three personalities of Bhavnagar who experimented and sew new trends in rural and liberal child education. Nanbhai's Gram Dakshinamutri and Lokbharati have prepared three generations of brilliant workers and leaders engaged in reshaping Indian village. Gijubhai's Dakshinamurti was important for new liberal children's education. Harbhai Trivedi pioneered a similar new trend in secondary education and his Home School became a model for contemporary educators in western India. Liberal women's education was born in Bhavnagar through the efforts of another reformer Amrutlal Dani. Bhavnagar's Samaldas College is the oldest institution of higher education in the region.
