
Designed
by a French architect, Chandigarh is the first planned modern city of
India. It serves as the joint capital of both, Punjab and Haryana
states. Also known as "City of Roses," it is one of the most
attractive cities of India.
Demographics
As per 2001 census, the population of Chandigarh was more than 9.5 Lacs
with 86,6% constituting urban population. The male female ratio is
1000:777 which is the lowest in the country.
Climate in Chandigarh
Chandigarh has a sub-tropical continental monsoon climate. This is
characterized by a seasonal hot summers, cool winters, unreliable
rainfall and great variation in temperature which can range from 0°C
to 44°C. In winters, frost sometimes occurs during December and
January.
How to visit Chandigarh?
Chandigarh has good reach from all the major cities of India. Located
250 km from Delhi, the city can be reached with ease.
- Air : The city has a domestic airport, with
direct flights to many places, including the capital of India, New
Delhi, Mumbai, Delhi, Jammu, and Amritsar.
- Rail : The rail network serves the city
conveniently. Several important trains and express trains also cover
the city on their route. Shatabdi Express and Himalayan Queen
provide two train connections every day between Chandigarh and
Delhi. Paschim Express connects the city to Mumbai.
- Road : Chandigarh is well served by an
excellent network of roads. The National Highways No. 21
(Ambala-Kinnaur) and 22 (Chandigarh-Leh) are the chief road ways
linking Chandigarh with the rest of the country. The city is within
motorable distance from a number of popular towns and pilgrimage
centres.

Education in Chandigarh
The city has a total literacy rate of 82% (as against the national
average of 65%). Chandigarh city has a good number of premier institutes
and colleges , thus forming a good base for higher education. The main
educational institute are the Punjab University, the Punjab Engineering
College and the Government College of Arts. Among the new teaching and
research institutions is the Postgraduate Institution of Medical
Education and Research and College of Architecture.
Economy of Chandigarh
- With a Per Capita Income of Rs. 67,370, Chandigarh is the richest
city in India.
- With three governments having their base here, most of the people
are in Government Services. Chandigarh is often called a "Pensioners
Paradise" because a major percentage of Chandigarh's population
consists of people who are either serving the Governments or have
