known as Kovai, Coimbatore is one of the major industrial cities in
South India. It is also referred to as the "Manchester of South
India". It is the third largest city in Tamil Nadu and the
administrative headquarters of Coimbatore District. Coimbatore is known
for its pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere, cosmopolitan outlook and
private enterprise and is one of the fastest growing cities of India.
Demographics
According to 1991 census, the population of Coimbatore was 8.16 lakhs
which rose to 14.3 lakhs in 2005. The sex ratio in 1991 was 1000 males
to 923 females. The literacy rate during the same year was 81.32%.
Climate in Coimbatore
Being situated at the foot hills of Nilgiris, the climate of Coimbatore
city is moderate and pleasant throughout the year. There is not much
temperature fluctuations between summers and winters. Summers are hot
with the maximum temperature reaching 39°C and the minimum is 21°C.
Winters are mild with the maximum temperature around 30°C and the
minimum temperature around 15°C. Coimbatore being in Tamil Nadu,
does not receive monsoon rains between June and September. However, it
experiences rains in October-November. The best time to visit Coimbatore
is between December and March.
How to reach Coimbatore?
Coimbatore is easily accessible through air, road and rail from the
other major Indian cities and states.
- Air : Coimbatore Airport is 12 km from the city
and is well connected with Mumbai, Chennai and Kozhikode (Calicut).
- Rail : There are two railway stations in
Coimbatore city (Coimbatore Junction and the Coimbatore North
Railway Station). A number of important trains like pass through the
city.
- Road : Bangalore, Chennai, Ernakulam, Kottayam,
Pondicherry, Rameshwaram and Thiruvananthapuram are well linked with
Coimbatore through road.
