
A
metropolis in northern India, the name Delhi refers to the National
Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT) which is a special union territory
jointly administered by the Central government, the NCT elected
government and three municipal corporations. Together referred to as
Delhi, both New Delhi and Old Delhi have many things to offer every
visitor starting from historic monuments, temples, mosques, churches and
beautiful gardens to educational institutes to health services to trade
and business.
Demographics
Delhi is the sixth most populous metropolis in the world with a
population of 15.3 million in 2005. Informally known as the National
Capital Region (NCR), Delhi's metropolitan area comprises the NCT and
the neighbouring towns of Faridabad and Gurgaon in Haryana, and Noida
and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh which makes it the sixth most populous
agglomeration in the world, with an estimated population of 19.7
million.
Climate in Delhi
Delhi is known for its extreme climate. Summers are long and very hot
starting from early April till September end, with the monsoon season in
between. The maximum temperature in summer can reach to 47 °C. Due
to Delhi's proximity to the Himalayas, cold waves from the Himalayan
region dip temperatures during winters. The winter temperature is
between 2°C and 25°C. Winter starts in November and peaks in
January with heavy fog. The city, however, has a pleasant climate from
February to April and from August to November.
How to reach Delhi?
Being the capital city of the country, Delhi is well connected to all
important cities within India and outside.
- Air : Situated in the southwestern corner of
the city, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) serves Delhi for
both domestic and international connections. In 2004, IGI recorded a
traffic of more than 8.5 million passengers. It is one of the
busiest airports in South Asia. Two other airports are Palam (now
part of the IGI complex) and Safdarjung Flying Club.
- Rail : Major railway stations are Old Delhi,
Hazrat Nizamuddin and New Delhi Railway Station. There is also the
Metro Rail Service within the city.
- Roads : Delhi is well connected to other parts
of India by five National Highways: NH-1, NH-2, NH-8, NH-10 and
NH-25.
