Situated
on the banks of the Sutlej River, Ludhiana is Punjab's most populated
metropolitan city. It is a major industrial city of Northern India.As per 1991 census, the population of Ludhiana was 24,26,343 with mala population at 13,15,648 and female population at 11,10,695. Ludhiana has very hot summers and very cold winters. The monsoon visits this city around July. During summer months, the temperature is around 41 degree celcius. Ludhiana is well connected with road and railways. Ludhiana is situated on Delhi-Amritsar Grand Trunk Road, that is, on the National Highway No.1. There is a daily Air Service from Ludhiana to Delhi as well as direct Railway Service to any part of the country. An international airport is planned for Ludhiana.
Ludhiana is home to the largest agricultural university in India, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). One of the most respected engineering colleges in the region is Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College. Ludhiana also has major medical institutions like the Christian Medical College (C.M.C.) and Dayanand Medical College (D.M.C.). Ludhiana is known as the "Manchester of India". It is a major textile and light engineering centre. Its hosiery goods are in great demand in all the markets of the east and the west. There are around 6,000 small to medium sized knitwear factories and eight big integrated units. Hero Cycles, the largest producer of bicycles in the world, was first established in Ludhiana.
