
Lying
in the Western coast and touching the Arabian Sea, Mangalore is the
chief port city of the state of Karnataka, India. Though known for its
religious places of worship, Mangalore is also known for green fields,
water falls, beautiful beaches and industries.
Demographics
The total population in 1991 was 7,59,705 with male population at
3,72,313 and female population at 3,87,392. The sex ratio, i.e number of
females per 1000 males was 1041.
Climate in Mangalore
The tropical weather in Mangalore makes it a very pleasant place to
live in. Summers and winters are quiet alike in the city. The average
temperature ranges between 27 and 34 degree celcius. The main problem in
this region is the humidity which is at an average of about 78 %. Best
time to visit Mangalore is between September and May.
How to reach Mangalore?
Mangalore is connected to the rest of India and the World by road,
rail, air and sea.
- Roads : There are three national highways which
pass through Mangalore connecting the city to the rest of the
country.
- Sea : The Mangalore Harbour provides a
connection by sea to the rest of the world. Dry, bulk and fluid
cargoes are handled by the port, providing an important gateway to
the state of Karnataka
- Air : The Mangalore Airport having a small
runway till 2005 handled only Boeing 737 sized aircraft. However, in
January of 2006 an Airbus 319 of Kingfisher Airlines was the first
aircraft in that class to land on this runway. Currently flights are
available daily to Mumbai and Bangalore and Chennai. Plans to have
night landing facilities in order to facilitate International and
long distance internal flights is underway.
- Railways : The Mangalore Railway Station used
to be the last station connecting Mangalore to the state of Kerala
in the south and to the rest of the country. The Broad gauge track
connecting Mangalore to Bangalore via Hassan is open for freight
traffic since May 2006. Movement of passenger traffic will start
after December 2006. The Konkan Railways came into being to connect
Mangalore to Mumbai.

Education in Mangalore
The Mangalore University was established in 1980. The University has
become a major centre for advanced academic studies and research.
Besides 26 post graduate departments offering different Post Graduate
programs, the University has 118 affiliated colleges imparting education
in the field of arts, commerce and management, science, law and
education. There also have been a large number of professional
institutions established in a variety of fields including engineering,
medicine, dentistry and hotel management.
Economy of Mangalore
- Mangalore's economy is dominated by agricultural processing and
port-related activities.
- Mangalore has been historically a ship building center. Mangalore
port is India's ninth largest cargo handling port.
- The port handles 75% of India's coffee exports and the bulk of it
cashew nuts.

- The completion of the Konkan Railway project will give a further
