 Formerly
part of the state of Madhya Pradesh, Raipur became the capital city of
the newly formed state of Chattisgarh in November 1, 2001. Chattisgarh
is the 10th largest state of India. Raipur city is the administrative
headquarters of Raipur District. The Raipur district is divided into two
major physical divisions : The Chattisgarh Plain and The Hilly Areas.

As per 2001 census, the population of Raipur was 605,131 (agglomeration
922,559).
Climate in Raipur
The climate of Raipur is quite hot in summer with temperature around 29
to 47 °C while the winter is quite pleasant with temperature around
10 to 27 °C.
How to reach Raipur?
- Rail : Raipur is situated on the
Nagpur-Bilaspur route of the Indian Railways. It is well connected
with important cities of India like Mumbai, Calcutta, Delhi,
Amritsar, Pune, Cochin, Patna, and Dhanbad.
- Roads : National Highway No.6 passes through
the city of Raipur and National Highway 43 links Raipur with
Vijayanagaram. It is well connected by roads to all important cities
of India.
- Air : After the city became the capital of
Chattisgarh state, the air links to the city has been revived. Along
with Indian Airlines, which connects the city to Bhubaneswar,
Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Nagpur, Air Deccan is flying to Kolkata
and Ranchi. There is also Jet Airways which has a daily flight to
Mumbai. The airport in Raipur is situated in the outskirts of the
city. It is the only commercially operating airport of Chattisgarh
state.

Education in Raipur
Raipur is served by three main universities namely, Pundit Ravi Shankar
Shukla University, Indira Gandhi Agriculture University, and Madhya
Pradesh Bhoj Open University. There are several colleges offering under
graduate and post graduate courses. Raipur also has some professional
educational institutes (Raipur Institute of Technolgy and University
Institute of Technology), a Govt. medical college, a Govt. engineering
college and a music academy.
Economy of Raipur
- Traditionally, the Raipur city has been described as an
agricultural-processing and saw-milling town
- Today, Raipur has become primarily a commercial city.
- Being located centrally in the state of Chhattisgarh, the city
now serves as a regional hub for trade and commerce for a variety of
local agricultural and forest products.
- There are several small scale industries like oil milling, soap
manufacturing and electrical welding.
- Raipur is one of Indias biggest iron markets.
- There are more than 300 rice milling plants. All major cement
manufacturing companies have their presence in the city.
