Till the year 1989, Panipat was a part of District Karnal in Haryana state. It was made a separate district in 1992. Historically known to be the site of three pivotal battles in Indian history and an ancient town handed by Pandavas to Kauravas, today Panipat is known world wide as a major textile manufacturer and exporter of the country.
The city has a population of 216,000 as per 2001 census.
Panipat has hot and humid climate. In summer, the temperature goes up to 44 degree celcius. In winter the temperature is around 4 degree celcius, especially in end December and beginning January.
A well developed network of railway connects Panipat to the rest of the country. The district is well connected by National Highway. It is connected by road and rail with Delhi (south) and Ambala (north). It is on the NH-1 and 90 kms away from Delhi.
