What is Griha Pravesh Puja, and why is it important?
Sanatam Dharam celebrates and worships everything. They have ‘Vidhi vat’ pujas for all occasions, which is significant. Griha Pravesh Puja is considered so crucial in Hinduism that it is only suggested to shift into your new home after performing this ritual.
That’s because before you decide to move into your new home, whether it was a home that you constructed on your own or bought an already constructed apartment, you must do a Griha Pravesh Pooja as it removes all sorts of negativity from the piece of land. This further ensures none of your future works sees any hindrance to getting completed.
The Havan performed on Griha Pravesh Muhurat is to make sure all the negative energies present in the home get removed, and the purification of your new home can be done. Since so many people enter your home when it’s been constructed, you might need to know what energies they attract with them and what vibes they bring along. This Puja also cures any Vaastu Dosh that your property might have had in the past.
Apart from that, Griha Pravesh is performed to impress the deities and seek their blessings for a new beginning in your new home. Since nothing prospers without the blessings of the almighty, people do everything possible to lead a happy and peaceful life in their new abode. Hence, Griha Pravesh pooja is performed.
Importance of having Griha Pravesh Pujan before shifting to a new home
Life cannot bloom without positivity and light. And our homes can’t bloom without having their fair share of positivity, just like we mentioned above that the fire of the pure Havan wipes out evil energies and silences the bad energies in and around your house. You need new energies and good vibes as their replacement.
Hence, mantras that are important from the point of view of Griha Pravesh and prosperity of home are chanted loudly on the Griha Pravesh Shubh Muhurat. People usually get this task done by Pandit Ji since they are experienced experts and are better at chanting loud mantras that echo in every corner of the house and force negativity to say goodbye.
Griha Pravesh puja is important to make sure positivity, fortune, and prosperity also enter with you in your new home and make your life better in all aspects. Hence, your home shifting should only be done after a Griha Pravesh Pooja.

You are wrong if you think there’s only one type of Griha Pravesh puja. There are a total of three types of Griha Pravesh Puja, all of which have their own importance. Based on how you are shifting to a new home, this is how you should opt for your kind of Griha Pravesh Pooja:

One must remember multiple things when doing an auspicious task in the most ritualistic way. Vaastu plays a crucial role in Hindi Astrology and especially when the house is concerned. In this case, Vaastu becomes a pivotal factor to discuss as you are about to shift your entire living to a new place, so Vaastu shanty is essential. Here are all the things you must keep in mind while performing Griha Pravesh Puja 2023
- Make sure the date you have chosen for Griha Pravesh Puja in 2023 is according to the Vaastu shanty muhurat. This includes the auspicious date, day, and time to enter the house. We have mentioned all these details above for your reference.
- On the day of Griha Pravesh Muhurat, decorate your front door with natural ingredients like Mango leaves, marigold flowers, toran, swastika, goddess Lakshmi’s feet, rangolis, etc.
- Ensure the main door is open and there are no obstacles between the passage.
- The Griha Pravesh Puja must be performed in the ‘Ishaan kon’ or northeast corner of the house. It is the ideal place for carrying out the Puja.
- If your Pandit Ji has forgotten to do Vaastu Shanti Puja during Griha Pravesh Shubh Muhurat, do ask him to perform a NavGriha Puja, Vaastu puja, and Ganesh Ji’s Puja to remove all sorts of Vaastu Dosha’s.
- Once everything is done, treat all the priests at home with respect and care. Make sure the food is first served to Pandit Ji, and then everyone else is allowed to eat it.
- Let the fire of the Havan keep igniting for as long as possible. The smell and smoke from it are good for removing negative energies and purifying the air.
- Conclude the Griha Pravesh Puja by following the guidelines provided by Pandi Ji about how all the Samagri should be taken care of, where to place the pictures of all the deities, and how to take care of all other things like Kalash, etc. Do as he says, and don’t just throw off anything without asking to get rid of it. This will have a harmful impact on your Puja.
Pro Tip 4: Sprinkle holy water in the home from the Kalash with the help of mango leaves. It will add more positivity and conclude the Griha Pravesh Puja in the most auspicious way.
Dos and don’ts during Griha Pravesh Shubh Muhurat in 2023
Here are the must-do things when you are planning to have a Griha Pravesh Puja in 2023
Dos:
- Before living in your new home, perform a ritualistic Vaastu Shanti and Griha Pravesh Puja.
- Clean your home thoroughly before placing your goods and shifting into your new home.
- Choose a place for placing the temple in your new home. This is a must-do and if possible, place the mandir in a northeast direction.
- Do charity after finishing your ceremony. The least you can do is, distribute all the remaining food, drinks, and sweets to poor people rather than throwing them away.
- Entering your home with Kalash, water, mango leaves, and coconut is one of the most auspicious things to do.
Don’ts:
- Do not perform Griha Pravesh puja in an incomplete home. The home should be completely ready, and the doors and windows must be installed, especially the main door.
- Do not serve non-veg food in your homecoming lunch. It is not good to eat or serve non-vegetarian food after doing Griha Pravesh Puja.
- You must wait to shift your furniture before performing the Griha Pravesh puja. Only a gas stove can be brought in before that since it is required in a few rituals of the Girha Pravesh ceremony.
- Keep the main door open after entering your new home and completing the Griha Pravesh ceremony.
- Performing Griha Pravesh Puja when there’s a death in the family or when a female of the family is pregnant is not suggested. So, avoid having Griha Pravesh Puja in both these conditions.
- Never keep the house empty or locked for three days after the Griha Pravesh Puja. Doing so is inauspicious.
Pro Tip 5: Never perform Griha Pravesh Puja or Vaastu Dosh Shanti Puja with closed doors. Always keep the doors open to invite positive energies and make way for bad energies to go out. Also, ensure the main door of your house is open, and the path is obstacle free. Since Lakshmi Ganesh puja is also done as a ritual of Griha Pravesh puja, it is said that the path of Lakshmi should not be barricaded as it restricts her entry to the home during Puja.

Avoid doing it during these four Hindi months because it is said that the gods are sleeping during these months. In 2023, Paush month is also coming under this category due to astrological reasons.
- Avoid Amavasya days (new moon days) for Griha Pravesh Puja.
- Griha Pravesh should be avoided in the Lunar months of the Hindi calendar.

1 year agoIn this awesome design of things you actually receive a B- for hard work. Where you lost me was in your specifics. You know, as the maxim goes, the devil is in the details… And it couldn’t be much more correct here. Having said that, let me reveal to you exactly what did work. The article (parts of it) is actually pretty powerful which is possibly the reason why I am making the effort to opine. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. Second, whilst I can see a leaps in reasoning you make, I am not necessarily convinced of how you appear to unite the ideas that produce your final result. For right now I will subscribe to your point however trust in the future you connect your facts much better.
